Skidmore College: Sociology

Project Green Light

Research Assistant

A key experience during my college career has been working as a research assistant in the Sociology department. The research I’m a part of explores people’s perceptions of the policing initiative Project Green Light in Detroit, Michigan. Through this research, I’ve been able to get hands-on field experience, interviewing (n=14) and surveying (n=115) individuals in Detroit, MI. My main role has been to help develop our research instruments, analyze our qualitative data, and meet with our research team to review our quantitative results. And, I’m thrilled to say that we are currently working on submitting a journal article for peer review. Perhaps most valuably, this experience has strengthened my decision-making skills, encouraging me to think independently and be confident in my abilities.

Peer Academic Coach

Sociology PAC Captain

As sociology PAC Captain, I work closely with my peers to facilitate a welcoming and effective learning environment for sociology students. Through guiding students on their coursework, especially social statistics, I have not only helped facilitate other people’s learning, but also strengthened my own sociological knowledge. Being a PAC, I find fulfillment in helping to create a supportive sociology community at Skidmore.

Team Member

Horses and horseback riding have always been an important part of my life, and at Skidmore, I’ve had the honor of being on their IHSA team. My responsibilities on the team included taking care of the horses, maintaining our barn and equipment, and working alongside my team members. In addition, being on such a competitive team during college reinforced my time-management skills. I’m forever grateful to my coaches, teammates, and Skidmore horses for teaching me invaluable lessons about dedication and perseverance.
