Education

Skidmore College '26 | The Madeira School '22

I chose to go to a liberal arts college because going to college, I had no idea what I wanted to study. After years of being told exactly what to study in school, I was faced with a choice: what will I choose to major in? This required awareness of my academic interests, something I didn’t have to consider in highschool, where the curriculum is standardized. And, so, I turned towards liberal arts, which allowed me to explore multiple avenues to figure out what sparked my fire. At Skidmore, I found the fields of sociology and gender studies. These majors resonate with me because of my desire to understand the social structures at play in people’s lives, group relations, and feminist theory. These majors have equipped me with critical thinking skills that strengthen my knowledge of the complex inner workings of society and my compassion for people.

Double-Major

I chose to double-major in sociology and gender studies because of my desire to comprehend how gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, ability, and class, shape one’s life chances.

Certainly, my identity as a woman has impacted the majors I chose, especially gender studies. My personal experiences as well as witnessing sexism against others made me keen on understanding where sexism comes from, how it operates, and how other social locations intersect with gender and sexuality to produce distinct forms of oppression.

Sociology’s focus on social institutions has helped me understand how our society works on a macro-scale, while gender studies has taught me the value of learning from one’s individual lived experiences.

I’m eager to bring my sociological imagination and feminist perspectives with me as I enter the professional world.
